Local Quark-hadron Duality in Electron Scattering

We present some recent developments in the study of quark-hadron duality in structure functions in the resonance region. To understand the workings of local duality we introduce the concept of truncated moments, which are used to describe the Q dependence of specific resonance regions within a QCD framework.

nN Backward Scattering

nN backward scattering data above 5 GeV /c are analyzed in terms of the baryon Regge pole exchange and accompanying Regge cut due to the strong absorption. The fit of the cross sections is reasonable. The role of the cut turns out to be very important: (1) The extrapolated magnitude of the L10 residue at a 4 =! is significantly larger than that without the cut. Ll0 residue with or without the w...

Experimental Test of Local Hidden-Variable Theories

We have measured the linear polarization correlation between the two photons from the 7 S~-6 P~-6 So cascade of Hg . The results were used to evaluate Freedman's version of the Bell inequality, 5 ~0. Our result is 6~+=+0.046+0.014, in clear violation of the inequality and in excellent agreement with the quantum mechanical prediction, 6Q+ =+ 0.044 +0.007. An important feature of the experiment w...

An experimental test of local adaptation in soil bacteria.

We extracted bacterial isolates of similar colony morphology from spatially located soil samples within 1 ha of old-growth forest. The same soil samples were used to prepare growth medium. Each isolate was then cultured in each medium and its growth recorded. There was no overall tendency for isolates to grow more successfully in their home site (i.e., the medium derived from the soil sample fr...

On Tate Local Duality

Let Fq be a finite field, and let g be its absolute Galois group. Hence g ∼= Ẑ, topologically generated by the Frobenius automorphism. Let A be a topological g−module, i.e. for each a ∈ A there is a positive integer n such that Frobn a = a (for us A will be either an elliptic curve or some torsion group). Thus the group A is the union of its subgroups Agn , the latter being g/gn-module, where g...
